Queen Margrethe II of Denmark handed over the "sovereignty role" to her eldest son Frederik, after 52 years of her reign.
European channel "Euronews" reported that Queen Margrethe II signed her historic abdication today, Sunday, during a meeting with the Danish Cabinet at the "Christiansborg" Palace in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, in the presence of members of the royal family and members of the Danish government.
Margrethe, who is 83 years old, is the first Danish queen to voluntarily abdicate the throne in nearly 900 years.
Several thousand people gathered outside the palace where the royal transfer ceremony took place, in a joyful atmosphere witnessed by the country in the first royal succession in more than half a century that occurred without the death of a king.
