A pharmacist in Ottawa confirmed that blood pressure is considered an important indicator of overall health, highlighting the importance of keeping it within healthy ranges.

Jordan Clark, a pharmacist at "Shoppers Drug Mart," said during a conversation with CTV Morning Live:

"Blood pressure is a risk factor for many health issues, including heart attacks and strokes, and it affects longevity."

Clark explained that high blood pressure over a long period can negatively affect organs, the heart, and the cardiovascular system. Therefore, regular monitoring of blood pressure is advised to avoid these health conditions.

What is Blood Pressure?

Clark defined blood pressure as the force with which blood presses against the walls of blood vessels (arteries).

• Systolic pressure: The top number that represents the force of blood pumping during heart contraction.

• Diastolic pressure: The bottom number that represents blood pressure when the heart is at rest.

Normal Blood Pressure Ranges

• Ideal: 120/80 or lower.

• If you have conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, the top number should be less than 130 and the bottom less than 80.

• For healthy individuals, a top number less than 139 and a bottom number less than 90 is acceptable, but regular monitoring is preferred.

Tips for Lowering Blood Pressure

• Walking and exercising.

• Taking deep breaths.

• Measuring blood pressure at different times of the day for a clear picture of changes.

Clark emphasized the importance of using mobile apps to monitor blood pressure and share it with a doctor to identify any changes or potential risks.
