Protesters against Ottawa's recent carbon tax increase are organizing a march west of Calgary.

This event, organized by a group called the "National Protest Against the Carbon Tax," is one of 15 events held across the country today, Monday.

According to the group's website, its goal is "the immediate repeal of the carbon tax, without replacing it with any other form of tax."

The rally is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 22 near Cochrane.

As of 7:45 a.m., about a dozen RVs had been set up beside the highway, and vehicles flying Canadian flags were gathering.

Several Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) vehicles were also parked nearby.

The group's website says it hopes to keep at least one central lane open for traffic and continue the event until its goals are achieved "no matter how long it takes."

The protests come as the federal government raised the carbon price from $65 per ton to $80 per ton on April 1.

The tax increase has been a major attack point for Conservatives, and several premiers, including the Premier of Alberta, have called on Trudeau to cancel the increase.
