Polish President Andrzej Duda stated that although no decision has been made regarding whether Poland will host nuclear weapons as part of NATO's nuclear sharing program expansion, he expressed his country's readiness to do so.
Duda told CTV's question host, Vassy Kapelos, in an exclusive interview to be aired on Sunday: "I know nothing about such decisions, so I say responsibly that there are no such decisions, but we announce our readiness."
According to NATO, the nuclear sharing arrangements in the alliance ensure that all member states share risks, but also benefit from "collective defense" by strategically hosting nuclear weapons in certain countries. The United States, the United Kingdom, and France are all nuclear-armed countries, while Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Turkey, and Italy host nuclear weapons provided by the United States.
The entire NATO alliance also shares the responsibility for decision-making when it comes to nuclear missions and deterrence.
With two years passing since Russia's war on Ukraine, Duda stated that if NATO collectively decides to enhance defenses on its eastern flank by hosting nuclear weapons in Poland, his country is ready.
Duda said: "This is not new information." "For many years, we have repeated that if NATO allies make such a decision to deploy within NATO or expand the nuclear sharing program to include Poland, we are ready, because we recognize that it is about enhancing the security of Poland and Europe."
When asked if that is closer to happening, Duda stated that the alliance members have not yet reached a judgment.
He said: "We have raised this issue in discussions with allies," and "there are no decisions in this regard.. I want to deny all claims that decisions have been made on this matter, and I have not participated in making any decisions."
Duda said there is no doubt that if Russian President Vladimir Putin succeeds in invading Ukraine, he would continue his attack and invade other countries.
He reiterated that Poland is "ready" to host nuclear weapons, "because we can see that Russia has become dangerous again, and that Russia is deploying its nuclear weapons."
Putin warned last month that Russia is ready to deploy its nuclear arsenal.
Duda added: "It is not the West that provokes Russia, and it is not NATO that provokes Russia, but on the contrary. It is Russia that provokes the West."
Duda said NATO members respond "exclusively" to Russian aggression.
In his interview, Duda also discussed Russia's war on Ukraine and the danger of "rapacious" Russian imperialism, his relationship with former U.S. President Donald Trump, NATO's defense spending goals, and his openness to purchasing Canadian natural gas, if possible.
