A family from Montreal, who received the wrong body after one of their relatives passed away in Cuba, has been compensated with $10,000 and an apology from the Caribbean nation.
Maryam Jargour stated that her family has recovered the money paid to repatriate her father's remains, but they still do not know what happened to his body.
One resident of Laval, Q.C., Farajallah Jargour, suffered a heart attack and died on March 22 while vacationing with his family near Varadero, Cuba.
However, the coffin that was sent to Canada last week contained the body of an unknown man at least 20 years younger and did not resemble the 68-year-old Syrian immigrant in any way.
Canadian Global Affairs says that Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly spoke with her Cuban counterpart, who the ministry says apologized to the family and agreed to refund the money paid for the repatriation service.
The ministry states that consular officials are working with the Cuban government to find out what happened to Jargour's remains and to rectify the situation.
