The new Prime Minister of Britain, Keir Starmer, promised today, Friday, that his Labour government would work from day one on national renewal, in his first speech as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from his office in Downing Street in the British capital, London.
He stated after the Labour Party ended 14 years of Conservative rule with a landslide victory in the elections: "The work of change begins immediately, but we have no doubt that we will rebuild Britain."
He continued in his first speech after becoming Britain’s 58th Prime Minister: "Now, our country has voted decisively for change and national renewal and for a return of politics to public service."
Starmer added that "politics can be a force for good," according to Sputnik news agency.
King Charles III of Britain officially appointed Labour Party leader Keir Starmer as Prime Minister during a meeting at Buckingham Palace and tasked him with forming a new government.
The British royal palace published a photo showing the King of Britain shaking hands with Starmer, whose party achieved a landslide victory in the elections.
Earlier, the King of Britain accepted the resignation of Conservative leader and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
The outgoing British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, announced today, Friday, that he would resign from his position as leader of the Conservative Party after the party's loss in the parliamentary elections.
Sunak said: "After this result, I will resign from the position of party leader; but not immediately, rather when formal arrangements are made for who will succeed me."
Sunak added that he would meet with King Charles III today, Friday, to formally present his resignation from the position of Prime Minister.
The British parliamentary elections took place yesterday, Thursday, and the Labour Party achieved a landslide victory, with the leader of the winning party in the parliamentary elections assuming the role of Prime Minister and forming the government.
According to British law, the party that has a majority in the House of Commons forms the next government, either alone or with the support of another party, with its leader serving as Prime Minister.
