The presidential candidate of the Taiwanese opposition party (Kuomintang) stated today, Thursday, that if elected, his future administration will use deterrence as the main tactic to prevent Beijing from launching a military attack on Taiwan.
The presidential and parliamentary elections in Taiwan are scheduled to be held the day after tomorrow, Saturday.
Ho Yu-ih, 66 years old, said at an international conference before the elections when looking at the risks regarding China, the most important thing is that we must continue to strengthen our national defense weapons and improve national defense capabilities so that we do not allow them to dare to start a war easily, adding: "If China wages a war, it will not be able to pay the price."
The presidential candidate continued that the biggest challenges facing Taiwan currently are the escalating military tension across the Taiwan Strait.
To reduce tension, he proposed a "three-dimensional strategy" that includes "deterrence, dialogue, and de-escalation."
Furthermore, he expressed his readiness to continue purchasing defense equipment from the United States, Taiwan’s ally.
It is noteworthy that Beijing has repeatedly demanded Washington to stop arming Taiwan.
