The Minister of Interior of the Libyan Government of National Unity, Imad Al-Tarabulsi, announced on Wednesday evening the deportation of more than 250 irregular migrants holding various nationalities to their countries.
Al-Tarabulsi stated during a press conference held alongside the head of the Illegal Immigration Control Authority, Mohammed Al-Khuja, that "the Illegal Immigration Authority will today deport a group of irregular migrants to their countries, including those holding Chadian, Somali, Nigerian, Sudanese, and Bangladeshi nationalities, and their number ranges between 250 and 270 migrants."
The minister also indicated that additional deportations are planned for the coming days to repatriate irregular migrants voluntarily in cooperation with the relevant authorities.
Al-Tarabulsi revealed the deportation of 162 individuals holding Ghanaian nationality last week, and 137 other migrants to Mali, in addition to others whose number has not been specified, who were deported from Benina International Airport in Benghazi to Bangladesh.
Additionally, more migrants, whose number has also not been specified, will be deported to Pakistan from the same airport next Thursday.
The same official mentioned that "Libya has spent billions of dollars to accommodate irregular migrants," adding that "the immigration issue has negatively affected Libya security-wise, economically, and socially."
It is worth noting that this announcement comes after a series of deportation operations carried out by the Illegal Immigration Control Authority recently, where it deported 456 irregular migrants to their countries on August 21st.
