Storm 'Ciara' hits southern England causing severe damage

The storm "Ciara," accompanied by strong winds and heavy rains, continued its path to northwest France and England during the night between Wednesday and Thursday.

Strong winds and heavy rains caused by Storm Ciara created major disruption in southern England on Thursday, with maritime transportation suspended for several hours from the port of Dover, and hundreds of schools closed.

On the island of Jersey, which was placed on red alert, wind speeds reached 160 kilometers per hour, forcing 35 people to stay in hotels due to damage to their homes, according to local police.

Closure of all schools and government buildings:

Also, all schools and government buildings in Jersey were closed, with authorities advising residents to stay in their homes.

Wind speeds were expected to reach between 100 and 110 kilometers per hour in the morning, and 100 kilometers per hour in the afternoon, according to the weather report on the government site.

Suspension of crossing between France and England:

At the airports of Jersey, Guernsey, and Alderney, all flights were canceled.

Crossings between England and France via the English Channel were suspended for most of the morning, while the port of Dover warned of expected delays in the coming hours.

The port also recommended on "X" site that passengers contact their ferry companies for information.

In Cornwall, which was put under orange alert in anticipation of strong winds, power outages affected more than 8,500 homes, according to local authority.

Another orange alert is in effect in southeast England regarding strong winds until noon.

Expected floods:

Flooding is also expected in 54 locations, mostly on the south coast of England, according to the Environment Agency.
