Jordanian King Abdullah II considered that climate change increases the difficulty of life for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, at a time when hostilities between Israel and Hamas resumed on Friday after the expiration of a week-long ceasefire.

The king said before world leaders during the United Nations Climate Conference COP28 held in Dubai, "We cannot talk about climate change in isolation from the surrounding humanitarian tragedies."

He added: "In Gaza, more than 1.7 million Palestinians have been displaced from their homes. Tens of thousands have been injured or killed in an area that is on the front lines of climate change."

He also affirmed "that the massive destruction caused by the war makes environmental threats represented by water scarcity and food insecurity more dangerous."

He pointed out that "in Gaza, our people live with a small amount of clean water and minimal food supplies, while climate threats cause the devastation caused by the war to worsen."

The war in Gaza casts its shadow over the conference. The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas allowed the release of 80 Israeli hostages, and 240 Palestinian prisoners. Also, foreigners mostly Thais working in Israel were released outside the framework of the ceasefire agreement. The ceasefire also allowed more humanitarian aid to enter the besieged and destroyed Gaza Strip.

During its unprecedented attack inside Israeli territory on October 7, Hamas held about 240 hostages taken to Gaza, according to the Israeli army.
