The Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan reported that a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred off the eastern coast of Taiwan early Saturday morning, and it is an aftershock of the main Hualien earthquake that struck the area on April 3, claiming at least 18 lives.

The bureau added that the quake, which occurred at 2:21 AM, was the largest aftershock since a magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit eastern Taiwan early last Tuesday, according to the Central News Agency of Taiwan "CNA" on Saturday.

According to data from the Weather Bureau, Taiwan had experienced 1,303 aftershocks by 6 AM since the Hualien earthquake, with six aftershocks registering at least six on the Richter scale and 63 between five and six.
