German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius arrived in France today, Friday, to agree on a pivotal armament project estimated at billions of euros.

Pistorius is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding in Paris today with his French counterpart Sébastien Lecornu to jointly establish what is called the Future Ground Combat System.

The project aims to connect combat tanks via a data network with support weapons such as drones and other unmanned systems, thereby achieving a leap in military technology.

The weapon system known as the "Main Ground Combat System" (MGCS), in which Germany will play a leading role, is the counterpart to what is known as the "Future Combat Air System" (FCAS), which is led by France.

Industrial distribution conflicts have led to delays and tensions between Berlin and Paris. In May 2021, after a struggle over industrial policy, Germany, France, and Spain already reached a "framework agreement" regarding the air combat system (FCAS) that is estimated in billions of euros.

Lecornu stated in Berlin last March that the combat tank system would serve as a "generation leap." Pistorius described the agreement in principle as "historic," saying, "We have agreed on the distribution of all tasks for this major project."

Details of the project have not yet been published.
