A joint statement was issued today, Tuesday, in the Japanese capital Tokyo, by the foreign and defense ministers of Japan and Britain, calling for a "humanitarian ceasefire" in Gaza.
The joint statement by the foreign and defense ministers of Japan and Britain stated that the two-state solution is the only viable path towards a just and lasting peace. The joint statement also called on Iran to play a constructive role in easing tensions in the Middle East.
The Japanese-British ministerial statement condemned Iran's destabilizing activities, including the transfer of missiles and drones to government and non-government actors.
This comes as foreign ministers of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the European Union, and the United States meet in Tokyo this week to discuss the conflict, which global powers have warned could spread to engulf the entire Middle East.
It is likely that this meeting will address the situation in Gaza in general terms, reflecting the differing concerns and political and economic loyalties within the group.
A spokesperson for the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is expected that countries will have different positions, but denied that there is difficulty in reaching common ground among G7 members, refusing to confirm the possibility of issuing a final statement.
In a related development, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that the death toll and injuries in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank have risen to 10,165 and about 27,000 injured since the outbreak of confrontations on October 7 until today.
The Palestinian News Agency “Wafa” said early Tuesday morning, November 7, 2023, that Israeli warplanes continued their raids and heavy bombardment, targeting homes and many buildings in various areas of the Gaza Strip, noting that the raids resulted in the martyrdom and injury of dozens of Palestinians, including children and women.
