The International Organization for Migration confirmed today, Tuesday, the sinking of a boat off the coast of Yemen, resulting in the death of 39 migrants.
The organization stated on its account on the platform "X" (formerly Twitter) that "a tragic incident occurred off the coast of Yemen that led to the sinking of a boat carrying 260 migrants yesterday, Monday."
The organization noted the "39 dead, 150 others missing, and 71 migrants rescued."
Local residents confirmed to the German News Agency (dpa) that a boat carrying migrants from the Horn of Africa sank yesterday off the coast of Shabwa province, eastern Yemen.
According to residents, the bodies of 39 migrants were recovered, and 71 others were rescued and transported to the Razum district of the province, while searches are still ongoing for 150 others.
The United Nations repeatedly announces the arrival of African migrants to Yemen, particularly from Somalia and Ethiopia, as many of them aim to move to Gulf countries, especially Saudi Arabia, in order to improve their living conditions.
Dozens of African migrants have previously lost their lives at sea due to their boats sinking off the coasts of Yemen.
