The Disaster Mitigation Agency in Jakarta has asked residents in the northern or coastal areas of Jakarta to be cautious of coastal flooding from today, Sunday, until the 27th of this month.

The head of the agency, Asnawa Aji, said in a statement today, Sunday: "The marine meteorological station, affiliated with the Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency, in the Tanjung Priok area, warns of the possibility of coastal flooding from January 21 to 27, 2024," according to the Indonesian news agency "Antara News" today.

He added that the peak high tide occurs from 7 to 11 a.m. local time.

The agency urged residents to monitor the latest information about sea waves.

Indonesia had announced plans to build a sea wall, in the latest measures aimed at preventing its capital Jakarta from flooding at a faster rate.

Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Erlanga Hartarto, said on January 10, at an event held in Jakarta showcasing the latest plan to build the sea wall, that the project would require 3 construction phases extending beyond 2040, where the first two phases require 164.1 trillion rupiahs "10.5 billion dollars" in funding, and did not mention the amount of money needed for the third phase.

Although the idea has been proposed for more than a decade, a proposal to build a sea wall was recently revived, as Jakarta has become the most vulnerable major city to flooding in the world.
