Health Canada issued a decision yesterday, Monday, to recall thousands of cups bearing the NÜTRL brand due to health risks.

The health department stated in its notice that approximately 33,000 cups were distributed to consumers as promotional gifts in various liquor boards and stores across the country, between April 29 and May 17 of this year, 2024. This recall was due to a manufacturing defect that may cause the cups to be contaminated with harmful substances.

The health notice also stated: "Based on the inspection and tests conducted on these cups so far, some cups may contain a chemical solution that was trapped between the inner walls of the cup and contains certain levels of sulfuric and phosphoric acids. This solution may be released when the cup is filled with liquid, posing a potential risk of serious injury to human health."

Health Canada added that the interaction between the contaminants and the cups could also lead to increased levels of iron, chromium, and nickel.

A range of health effects is associated with swallowing these chemicals, including "burns to the lips, tongue, throat, and stomach or damage to other tissues, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea."

Starting from May 23, Sunscope reported that it had received 43 reports from consumers who experienced various symptoms after using the recalled product, with the most common symptoms being headaches, feelings of nausea, stomach cramps or pain, and diarrhea.

Health Canada advises consumers to immediately stop using the affected product and contact Sedgwick for assistance.
