People magazine reported on Sunday that American actress Shannen Doherty, who rose to fame for her role as high school student Brenda Walsh in the popular TV series "Beverly Hills 90210" in the 1990s, passed away after years of living with cancer. She was 53 years old.

The magazine quoted Doherty's agent Leslie Sloane saying, "With a heavy heart, I confirm the death of actress Shannen Doherty. She lost her battle with cancer on Saturday, July 13, after many years of fighting the disease."

Doherty had publicly announced her battle with breast cancer, revealing in 2015 that she was undergoing treatment for the disease. In 2023, a tumor in her brain was removed, and it was discovered that cancer had spread to her bones.

The actress, who previously starred in the film "Heathers," gained widespread popularity on "90210" for portraying the character Brenda, an honor student from Minnesota struggling to fit in with her wealthy classmates.

Her character in the show became embroiled in a love triangle with Dylan McKay (Luke Perry) and Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth). In real life, Doherty had conflicts with Garth and other co-stars, leaving the 90210 series during its fourth season in 1994. The show continued until 2000 without her.

In 1998, "90210" producer Aaron Spelling cast Doherty in the supernatural series "Charmed" as Prue Halliwell, the eldest of three sisters with magical powers. The show was a huge success but also faced reports of behind-the-scenes turmoil.

People magazine described Doherty as the "famous bad girl of the 90s," citing her reputation for partying, being late to set, and conflicts with co-stars and her bosses.

In 2023, in an audio broadcast titled "Let's Be Clear with Shannen Doherty," the actress said she takes "full responsibility for her actions" and acknowledged that her behavior "would stray a bit" when she frequented nightclubs in her early twenties.

She also stated that she spoke out more than other women working in television at that time, telling Spelling and others when she thought the script needed improvement.

She added in the audio broadcast: "I was raised to have an opinion, and that my opinion should be valued, so I kept pushing against that machine, against men who really didn't want to hear my opinion."

She said, "Later, I learned the art of simple diplomacy. I learned that there might be a better way to say some things."

The actress reprised her role as Brenda in the "90210" reboot in 2008 and 2019, and she said that she and Garth reconciled after they became adults and left their teenage conflicts behind.

Doherty was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 12, 1971, and began acting when she was a child. At the age of eleven, she played the role of Jenny Wilder in the final season of the classic television series "Little House on the Prairie."

In 1988, Doherty starred in the dark comedy Heathers, which became a classic film.

Doherty was married three times, the last being to photographer Kurt Iswarienko. She filed for divorce from him in 2023.
