Some Canadians will receive another installment of the Canadian carbon tax rebate for 2024 in their bank accounts or by mail on Monday. But who is exactly eligible? And how much can they receive?

Taxpayers living in most Canadian provinces, excluding British Columbia, Quebec, and the territories, are eligible for the rebate (as long as they applied by March 15). If you are under 19 years old, you must either:

have, or have had previously, a spouse or common-law partner

be a parent living with your child, or have been one previously.

The carbon rebate, formerly known as the Climate Action Incentive, aims to offset the cost Canadians pay for carbon pricing when purchasing fuel.

This rebate is issued every three months on the fifteenth day of the month, with the first rebate having been in April last year, and the remaining payments due in October of this year and January 2025. If the fifteenth falls on a public holiday or weekend, the payments will be deposited on the last business day prior.

As of April of this year, the Canadian government has added an additional 10% to the rural supplement "in recognition of the increased energy needs of rural residents and their reduced access to clean transportation options."

How much can you receive?

The amount Canadians receive from the carbon rebate depends on where they live and their family situation. It is determined annually based on the amount the federal government expects to collect in each province.

For example, a single adult taxpayer in New Brunswick can receive about $95 in each quarterly payment, while a family of four in Alberta is likely to receive $450 with each deposit. Those who are unsure of the amount they will be entitled to can check the rebate calculator in Ottawa for a general estimate.

Eligible Canadians who have not received the rebate within 10 days of the expected payment date are encouraged to contact the Canada Revenue Agency.
