The German authorities said today, Sunday, that a suspect was arrested in a stabbing attack that took place last week at a gym in the city of Duisburg in western Germany, which resulted in four people being seriously injured.
The police and prosecution said in a statement that the man, a 26-year-old Syrian citizen, was arrested shortly after midnight.
He was scheduled to appear before a judge on Monday to determine whether he could remain in custody on suspicion of attempted murder and other crimes pending possible charges.
On Friday, the police published photos of a man wanted in the attack after obtaining footage from a surveillance camera located near the John Reed fitness studio where the attack took place late on Tuesday.
The authorities also offered a reward of 2000 euros ($2200) for information leading to his arrest.
Two men, one Syrian and one German, went to the police on Saturday afternoon to provide information about the suspect, whom they recognized from the photos.
The police took the necessary and legal measures and arrested the suspect at his apartment in Duisburg, where they found knives that may have been used in the attack.
On the other hand, the police and public prosecutor said that the man successfully applied for asylum in Germany in 2016 and has no prior police record.
They added that they are still investigating the motive behind the attack he carried out.
Officials said the attacker apparently targeted the most seriously injured victim, a 21-year-old man who remains in life-threatening condition.
The other victims are also two men aged 24 and 32 years old.
