The French presidency announced that President Emmanuel Macron issued, today Tuesday, a decision to appoint the Minister of National Education Gabriel Attal as Prime Minister, succeeding Élisabeth Borne, who submitted her resignation yesterday, Monday, and tasked him with forming the French government.

With this appointment, the 34-year-old Attal becomes the youngest Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic in France, breaking the record of the socialist Laurent Fabius, who was appointed Prime Minister at the age of 37 in 1984.

Attal's selection came at a time when French President Macron seeks to give a new boost to his second term at the beginning of the new year, especially before the European Parliament elections scheduled for next June, and before hosting the Olympic Games in Paris during the summer.

Gabriel Attal is a French politician, born in 1989 in Calais near Paris, and became a member of the Socialist Party in 2006.

In 2018, President Macron appointed him during his first term as Secretary of State at the Ministry of National Education and Youth, then he became the official government spokesperson, then minister responsible for public accounts at the Ministry of Economy and Finance in Élisabeth Borne’s government after Macron’s re-election in April 2022.

In July 2023, he was appointed Minister of National Education, succeeding Pap Ndiaye, and issued several decisions at the beginning of the 2023 - 2024 school year, including banning the wearing of abayas in public schools, and starting school early in 2024 for students facing learning difficulties.
