Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore said today, Monday, that some countries are trying to back out of the historic agreement reached at the "COP 28" climate summit to move away from using fossil fuels.
197 countries had agreed at the United Nations conference held in Dubai to accelerate the removal of fossil fuels from their energy systems within this decade and to eliminate them completely by mid-century.
Bloomberg News Agency quoted Al Gore, who currently serves as Chairman of Generation Investment Management, in an interview with Bloomberg Television on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum being held this week in Davos, Switzerland, saying that some countries now claim that part of this commitment is optional.
Al Gore, who did not mention specific countries by name, said: "Some of those who signed this commitment are now trying to claim it was optional and are trying to back away from it a little; there are many loopholes and many misleading phrases."
