India hosted the third Global South Summit, which was held in a virtual format.
This initiative represents an extension of the vision of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed at bringing together Global South countries to share their perspectives and priorities through a common platform regarding a full range of issues.
India had previously hosted the first Global South Summit (VOGSS) on January 12-13, 2023, as well as the second Global South Summit on November 17, 2023, with both summits being held in a virtual format.
The previous two sessions of the summit saw participation from over 100 countries from the Global South.
The inputs and feedback received from leaders of developing countries during these two summits were appropriately reflected in the agenda and discussions of the G20 Summit chaired by India last year, including the G20 Leaders’ Declaration issued in New Delhi.
The theme of the third Global South Summit was "Empowering the Global South for a Sustainable Future," and the third session served as a platform to expand discussions on a range of complex challenges still affecting the world, such as conflicts, food and energy crises, and climate change - all of which are challenges that impact developing countries severely in different ways.
The third Global South Summit held ten ministerial sessions, in addition to the opening session at the level of Heads of State/Government, which was hosted by Modi.
Egypt also attended ministerial sessions, specifically the trade session for "Trade for Development - Perspectives from the Global South" and the foreign ministers' session on "The Global South and Global Governance."
During the second session of foreign ministers on "The Global South and Global Governance," Egypt was represented by Ambassador Abu Bakr Hafni Mahmoud, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, and Affairs of Egyptians Abroad. The ministers discussed a range of issues including the urgent need to review multilateralism, improving access for Southern countries to financing and technology, and establishing collective initiatives to address common challenges and enhance cooperation among Global South countries.
Wael Abdel Rahim, the Minister Plenipotentiary and Head of Asia Department at the Egyptian Commercial Services, attended a session on "Trade for Development - Perspectives from the Global South." The discussion addressed supply chain integration, food security, support for small and medium enterprises, and the challenges facing the international trade system.
