The Ottawa fire service says no one was injured after a fire at a former vacant school in Sarsfield on Sunday morning.
A passerby called 9-1-1 to report smoke coming from the former St. Hughes School located on Colonial Road near Deschenes Road before 8:30 a.m.
Upon arrival at the fire, firefighters noticed thick smoke and intense heat inside the building as they began searching for anyone who might be inside.
There are no fire hydrants in the area, which is common in the city's rural areas, so tanker trucks need to transport water from a source about five kilometers away on Girouard Road.
Several fires broke out inside the building, and a second alarm was sounded to bring more firefighters to the scene.
