The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, stated that actions that violate the status of Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem pose a "threat to regional stability."

This came in a post on his account on the platform "X," on Wednesday, in response to the call of Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi for the United Nations Security Council and the international community to stop "Israel's illegal actions that violate the legal status of historical and sacred sites in Jerusalem."

Borrell indicated that he shares Safadi's concerns about the status of sacred places, and referred to actions that pave the way for violations by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who led incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque and made statements about building a synagogue in the mosque.

Borrell affirmed that these concerns are "entirely legitimate," emphasizing the necessity for the international community to address this issue.

On Monday, Ben Gvir claimed in press statements that the government's policy allows for praying at Al-Aqsa Mosque, adding: "There is equal law between Jews and Muslims; I would build a synagogue there."

This is the first time Ben Gvir has spoken about establishing a synagogue inside Al-Aqsa Mosque, after he repeatedly called in recent months for allowing Jews to pray in the mosque.

Ben Gvir's new statements coincided with more settlers performing Talmudic rituals during their incursions into Al-Aqsa, under the protection of the occupation police.
