An earthquake measuring 5.2 struck central Greece today, Friday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center.
A correspondent for the "Novosti" agency reported that the residents of the capital Athens felt strong and prolonged tremors. The Seismology Laboratory at the University of Athens initially estimated the earthquake's strength at 5.1, before raising the estimate to 5.2.
According to Greek seismologists, the earthquake's epicenter was on the island of Euboea, the second largest island of Greece, about 80 kilometers from Athens, at a depth of ten kilometers, and seven minutes later, a 3.8 magnitude aftershock occurred with the same epicenter.
The governor of Central Greece, Fanis Spanos, also stated that the tremors caused minor damage. He said: "Shelves fell in several stores, and small landslides occurred on roads near the earthquake's epicenter. For this reason, the road in the Kakia Skala area was closed to traffic."
The tremors on Euboea do not cause significant concern among Greek seismologists, and earthquake expert Kostas Papazachos told the "Proto Thema" newspaper that "the earthquake occurred in a mountainous area and is not a cause for concern."
There have been no reports of injuries or casualties from the earthquake.
