The Canadian government announced the death of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, a member of the Conservative Party, at the age of 84.

Brian Mulroney was influential in Canadian political history. He was born in Quebec, studied political science, and became an advisor to Conservative Prime Minister John Diefenbaker.

He also obtained a law degree before running to be the next federal leader of the Conservative Party in 1976 and lost the round to Joe Clark.

He led a strong federal campaign in 1984 and managed to win it with the largest number of seats in Canadian history, and received many awards.

He won his second term and introduced the goods and services tax among Canadians.

Canada headed towards a recession in 1992, and approval ratings for Mulroney also dropped unprecedentedly. He then announced that the time had come to step down from his position.

He officially announced his resignation, and Kim Campbell succeeded him after several months of his predecessor’s resignation, becoming Canada’s first female Prime Minister.
