Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has urged the federal government to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, steel, aluminum, critical minerals, and other products.
Poilievre stated that China produces steel, aluminum, and electric vehicles at significantly low prices through huge subsidies and taking advantage of weak environmental and labor standards.
He spoke in front of Stelco in Hamilton, Ontario on Friday, saying they are doing this with the aim of crushing our production of steel, aluminum, and cars.
Poilievre is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to agree to a set of tariffs proposed by the United States; according to his proposal, Canada would implement:
A 100% tariff on electric vehicles made in China.
A 50% tariff on semiconductors and solar cells.
A 25% tariff on steel and aluminum products as well as other critical minerals for electric vehicle batteries.
Prohibit any discounts for Chinese electric vehicles.
