Yesterday marked the start of National Francophonie Immigration Week organized by the Federation of Francophone and Acadian Communities (FCFA) across Canada.

The theme of this year's edition of this activity-filled week is "Heritage of Tomorrow."

Salwa Madri is the director of the Francophone Immigration Network (RIF) in the province of Manitoba, the organization responsible for coordinating the events of this Immigration Week.

This event is "really about invoking the idea of what we will leave for future generations, whether in terms of cultural or social heritage, for example," says Madri about National Francophonie Immigration Week.

"It is therefore a collective call to reflect on the actions we are taking today, those we have taken in the past, which will have a long-term impact on future generations," adds Madri.

Language is one of the elements we want to preserve, especially by passing on cultural heritage to our future generations.

According to Madri, it is essential to support immigration as it represents an opportunity for Francophone communities.

"We are working to promote and provide services in French so that we can indirectly serve the entire local community as well," says Madri.

"According to the population census conducted by Statistics Canada, nearly 39% of immigrant (Francophone) households use French as a primary language at home, which is a higher percentage than that recorded among Canadians," adds Madri.

Thus, Francophones from immigrant backgrounds who come to settle in Canada maintain the French language even though, in some cases, they live in an environment where Francophones are a minority.
