Toronto Hydro confirmed that fewer than 5000 customers across Toronto are still without electricity following a widespread outage on Wednesday, suspected to be caused by flooding at the Hydro One transmission station.
Toronto Hydro wrote on its website, "We are currently responding to the widespread power outage across the city due to the loss of supply from Hydro One," adding, "If the power outage is not displayed on the map, please report it online or by calling 416-542-8000 (press 1). Thank you for your patience and understanding."
At its peak, approximately 167,000 customers were without electricity, but power has been restored to most parts of the city.
It clarified, "Given the nature of the situation, please note that we are currently unable to provide individual estimated restoration times (ETRs). The ETRs displayed on the outage map are preliminary estimates based on historical data and may change as restoration efforts continue."
The power outage map on the utility's website showed outages in several areas of the city yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, including Toronto, Parkdale, East York, and Liberty Village.
The City of Toronto stated that about 30 community centers in the city were affected by the power outage, which may impact summer camps today, Wednesday. The camps were operating yesterday, Tuesday.
In the same context, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) said that nearly 20 schools are without power following the storm, and some schools may also be affected by flooding.
Deputy Mayor Osma Malik, a member of the Spadina—Fort York council, took to X to ask people to keep phone lines open for emergencies.
