Clashes erupted between ultra-Orthodox Jewish protesters and the Israeli police in Tel Aviv, after the occupation army announced yesterday, Tuesday, that it would begin summoning them for military service within days.
The Arab World News Agency reported, citing the Israeli newspaper "Haaretz", that hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jewish protesters blocked a major highway in Bnei Brak east of Tel Aviv and clashed with the police, who arrested several of them.
The army's announcement came after a ruling from the Supreme Court requiring ultra-Orthodox Jews to be summoned for military service after a long period of exemption under political arrangements.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid earlier this month called on the Israeli army to issue immediate orders to conscript 30,000 ultra-Orthodox Jews; in implementation of the Supreme Court ruling which had previously mandated them to serve in the military.
The occupation army has been waging a war on the Gaza Strip since October 7, which has resulted in the martyrdom of more than 39,000 Palestinians and the injury of over 88,000 others, in addition to thousands missing.
