Canadian security officials have warned of a Russian propaganda campaign spreading misleading information online on the social media platform X.
The Canadian Cyber Security Centre stated that individuals affiliated with RT, formerly known as Russia Today, are using fake social media personas under the direction of the Russian government.
Officials confirmed that the fake social media users are disseminating misleading information that is often presented as if it comes from Americans and are promoting messages that support the objectives of the Russian government.
Canada, along with the United States and the Netherlands, is working together to disrupt the disinformation campaign, but officials caution that similar activity may emerge on other sites.
Last month, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned during a visit to Canada that misleading information poses a threat to the defense alliance and its efforts to arm Ukraine against the Russian invasion.
This warning also comes at a time when American and Canadian officials are grappling with how to counter foreign attempts to disrupt elections using artificial intelligence and misleading information.
