The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said there has been a "sharp increase" in the number of fatal motorcycle accidents across the province in recent weeks, describing this trend as "meaningless and preventable."

The force stated that 36 motorcyclists have lost their lives on roads patrolled by the Ontario Provincial Police so far this year, representing an increase of more than 50 percent over the number of motorcycle fatalities recorded at this time in 2023.

The Ontario Provincial Police noted that at least 12 of these fatal motorcycle accidents occurred in July alone, with five happening during the first week of August.

The police stated that speeding, loss of control, and improper overtaking are the driving forces behind the accidents.

The Ontario Police added in a press release issued on Friday: "Safe and vigilant driving by motorists is all it takes to prevent the unnecessary loss of life on the roads."

"Motorcyclists must also do their part to stay safe by driving within speed limits and adhering to all traffic laws that significantly contribute to the safety of riders and their passengers."
