The Canadian government said it has completed negotiations with the United States regarding an agreement that will allow the use of U.S. launch technology, expertise, and data for space launch operations in Canada.

The government stated in a press release that the agreement, which has not yet been signed, will establish the necessary legal and technical safeguards, ensuring the proper handling of sensitive technology.

Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said in a statement: "Canada's vibrant and growing commercial space launch industry relies on its ability to collaborate across borders... The conclusion of negotiations between Canada and the United States means we are one step closer to finalizing this agreement, which, when implemented, will position our country to be a global leader in commercial space launches," according to the Associated Press.

“Maritime Launch Services,” the company developing the first commercial spaceport in Canada in northeastern Nova Scotia, described the agreement as a significant step forward for the industry.

The company's CEO Stephen Matier said: "We look forward to welcoming our American customers to Nova Scotia in the coming months as we prepare for Canada’s first orbital launch from the Nova Scotia spaceport in 2026."

The statement added that the federal government is in the process of updating its regulatory framework regarding commercial space launch activities as the industry experiences tremendous growth worldwide.

Ottawa said it hopes to position Canada as a future leader in commercial space launches. The country has geographical advantages, including vast areas with low population density and high-inclination orbits.
