Canada announced the provision of 65 million dollars to fund international assistance to Lebanon, of which 27 million dollars is allocated for humanitarian aid and 38 million dollars for developmental assistance.
This represents an additional extension of the economic aid provided by Canada to Lebanon, and a continuation of the Canadian government's commitment to supporting the Middle East.
Canada has allocated more than 500 million dollars as aid to Lebanon since 2016.
Below are the details of the new funding of 65 million dollars: The 38 million dollars for humanitarian assistance will focus on providing food, clean drinking water, sanitation, basic healthcare, and protection services, including for survivors of sexual violence and gender-based violence.
The development funding includes 20 million dollars to improve the value chains of fruits and vegetables, 13 million dollars to support women-led projects, and 5 million dollars to enhance women's participation in decision-making processes.
Canada and Lebanon have strong diplomatic ties, celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations.
Canada also has a long history of supporting Lebanon in enhancing women's empowerment, building resilience, and promoting long-term development. The Canadian government's support for Lebanon aims to address political instability, the financial crisis, challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the challenges of hosting large numbers of refugees.
