The British government has announced that it will ban nitrous oxide commonly known as "laughing gas" and classify it as a Class B drug.
This step, which is set to take effect by the end of this year, follows an investigation conducted by the government that revealed a significant increase in hospital admissions for people using this gas.
This new classification of the compound means that its users could face a prison sentence of up to two years, while its sellers could receive a sentence of up to 14 years.
Statistics also indicate that nitrous oxide is the second most commonly used drug among people aged 16 to 24 in England after cannabis.
