A British warship and an American aircraft carrier shot down, on Wednesday, drones and missiles launched by the Houthis towards an American ship in the Red Sea.

The interception operation attracted the attention of Western media because the British ship and the American destroyer performed the required mission exactly, which is to confront the Houthi attacks, according to American and British media.

What happened?

The Houthis said they targeted an American ship that was supporting the Israeli occupation forces, according to a statement by the Houthi spokesman, Brigadier General Yahya Abu Sarea.

In a statement published on Twitter, he said, "The Yemeni Armed Forces continue to prevent Israeli ships or those heading to the ports of occupied Palestine from navigating in the Arabian and Red seas until the aggression stops and the siege on our steadfast brothers in the Gaza Strip is lifted."

According to the American army, the Houthis carried out 26 attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea since November 19, 2023.

But the warplanes of the "F/A-18" model, onboard the aircraft carrier "USS Dwight D Eisenhower," and the British warship "HMS Diamond" deployed in the Red Sea, shot down 18 drones, two cruise missiles, and one ballistic missile.

BBC quoted a source from the British army saying that the "HMS Diamond" ship shot down seven Houthi drones using "Sea Viper" missiles and weapons, with each missile costing more than $1.3 million.

Where did the attack take place?

The attack took place off the coastal Yemeni cities of Hodeidah and Al-Mokha, according to the private intelligence company Ambrey.

In the Hodeidah attack, Ambrey said that ships reported via radio that they saw missiles and drones, and that the U.S.-allied warships in the area urged "ships to proceed at maximum speed."

The U.S. Central Command said that the attack was complex, as the attacks launched by the Houthis included bomb-carrying drones, anti-ship cruise missiles, and an anti-ship ballistic missile.

It mentioned that the 18 drones, two cruise missiles, and the anti-ship missile were shot down by F-18 aircraft from the destroyer "USS Dwight D Eisenhower," as well as the American Arleigh Burke-class destroyers "USS Gravely," "USS Laboon," and "USS Mason," along with the British warship "HMS Diamond."
