The Dockworkers' Union at the Port of Barcelona refused to load and unload any military shipments amid the war in Gaza, urging the protection of civilians in conflict areas, following a similar move taken by Belgian transport unions last week.
Josep Maria Diop, the union secretary, told Reuters on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, that the decision taken by the union is largely symbolic and seeks to encourage other Spanish ports to follow suit.
This union is the only one representing 1,200 dockworkers at the Port of Barcelona.
Diop said organizations promoting peace can help the union identify containers containing military equipment, affirming that he is convinced there are military shipments from Barcelona because "the port handles all kinds of goods."
The Barcelona Port Authority also refrained from commenting, stating that it has no data on military shipments.
The Zionist entity is waging a war on the Gaza Strip following the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas carrying out the "Al-Aqsa Flood" operation on October 7 in Israeli towns, which left 1,400 dead, as well as 240 people captured.
Health officials in Gaza also say that the retaliatory attacks launched by Israel have resulted in the martyrdom of more than 10,000 people.
The official Spanish news agency announced last week from government sources that Spain does not plan to export any lethal military equipment to be used against Palestinians.
The Dockworkers' Union at the Port of Barcelona said it opposes all forms of violence wherever they occur, including in Israel and the Palestinian territories, adding that its boycott aims to protect civilians everywhere.
