A man was arrested in Argentina after he aimed his firearm at Vice President Cristina Kirchner outside her home, in an incident that sparked a series of condemnations from politicians in Argentina and around the world.

Several television channels broadcast an image of this person aiming a weapon at Kirchner's head just a few meters away from her without firing any bullets, while she was speaking to her supporters outside her home in the Recoleta neighborhood.

Police officers then arrested the suspect and took him to a police car on a nearby street, which they immediately cordoned off. A reporter for AFP mentioned that the car left the scene shortly afterward amid shouts and denunciations from the crowd.

Argentine President Alberto Fernández said in a statement hours after the incident that “Cristina is alive because the weapon, which contained five bullets, did not fire for a reason that has not been technically confirmed, despite the trigger being pulled.”

The head of state condemned the incident, considering it “extremely serious.” He noted that it was “the most dangerous incident the country has witnessed since democracy was restored” in 1983.

The intersection in front of the building where Kirchner lives was quickly closed off. Several Argentine media outlets reported that the suspect is 30 years old and holds Brazilian nationality.
