The authorities in Argentina arrested 3 people holding Syrian and Lebanese citizenships, on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack in the country, according to the Minister of Security and the Federal Police.
The authorities did not provide any further details about the suspects, but said officials are investigating their purposes for visiting Argentina, and about an order for the expulsion of 35 kilograms that was on its way from Yemen to one of the suspects.
The Argentine Federal Police said in a statement: "There were indications of the possible entry of 3 citizens of Syrian and Lebanese origin into the country, who were scheduled to meet in Buenos Aires after arriving on different flights, to plan a terrorist act ultimately."
The police did not specify when the arrests took place.
Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich told reporters that the suspects had previously entered Argentina with passports from other countries, and added that no details about them will be disclosed until their identities are verified.
This comes less than two months after the Federal Police in Brazil arrested at least 3 men in connection with dismantling what is suspected to be a cell affiliated with the Lebanese Hezbollah, based on a report from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
One of the detainees in Brazil had taken photos and videos of two Jewish synagogues and a Jewish cemetery in Brasilia.
In Argentina, the Israeli embassy and a Jewish community center were subjected to deadly attacks in 1992 and 1994 respectively, resulting in nearly 100 deaths.
