Nova Scotia witnessed this Monday morning an accumulation of 80 cm of snow after the strong storm that hit eastern Canada, and the bus service in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality was canceled throughout the day, where the city of Halifax operated only some routes, urging everyone to avoid unnecessary travel.
Bob Roubichoud, a meteorologist at the Canadian Environment Agency, said in a Monday interview: "This is a lot of snow, so the important thing now is to stay off the roads," and he also said: "This is the top priority because we need to give snow removal crews the chance to keep the roads clear for emergency vehicles, especially since the strong winds are blowing snow and reducing visibility."
At the same time, schools in the municipalities of Halifax and Cape Breton announced that they would close their doors on Monday due to the storm.
Roubichoud said that the low-pressure system stalled southeast of the Atlantic coast led to 75 cm of snow falling along the eastern coast of Nova Scotia and about 80 cm in Cape Breton since early Sunday.
He said he was aware of some reports of snowfall reaching 100 cm in Cape Breton.
Parts of Nova Scotia are expected to see an additional snowfall of between 30 to 50 cm by Tuesday.
