The U.S. Department of State is conducting an investigation into the airstrikes carried out by Israeli occupation forces in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon using white phosphorus, according to a report published by The Wall Street Journal.

The American newspaper added, quoting government officials, that Washington aims to verify whether Tel Aviv used internationally banned white phosphorus weapons, provided by the United States, in killing civilians.

Officials mentioned that the agency is investigating an airstrike carried out on October 31 in the Jabalia refugee camp, which resulted in the martyrdom of more than 125 people.

The American newspaper pointed out that investigators suspect that Israel may have used a bomb weighing about 907 kilograms in that raid.

Spokesperson Matthew Miller explained that the Department of State aims to assess "incidents of systematically targeting civilians and develop appropriate political responses to reduce the risks of such incidents occurring in the future," and to encourage partners to conduct military operations in accordance with international humanitarian law, according to the report.

Amnesty International had said that its Crisis Evidence Lab verified that Israeli military units striking Gaza are equipped with white phosphorus artillery shells.

White phosphorus is a substance that burns at very high temperatures when exposed to air, can continue burning inside flesh, causing horrific pain and serious injuries that cannot be extinguished with water.

White phosphorus bombs are internationally banned under the 1980 Geneva Convention, which prohibited the use of white phosphorus as an incendiary weapon against humans and the environment.

Since October 7, Israeli occupation forces have launched an aggression on the Gaza Strip, resulting in the martyrdom of 28,576 citizens, injuries to more than 68,291 others, in addition to thousands of missing persons still under the rubble.
