The French government stated that many communication lines were subjected to vandalism, affecting fiber optic lines and both fixed and mobile phone lines as cities across France host events for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The extent of the impact was unclear, nor was it clear if it affected any Olympic activities. The vandalism came after deliberately set fire attacks hit train networks across France on Friday, just hours before the Olympic opening ceremony.

Marina Ferrari, the Minister of State for Digital Affairs, posted on X that the damage incurred in several areas during the night from Sunday to Monday affected communication operators. She stated that this led to a local impact on access to fiber optic lines and both fixed and mobile phone lines.

The organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympics did not immediately comment.

A French police official said that at least six administrative departments in France were affected, including the area surrounding the coastal city of Marseille, which is hosting Olympic football and sailing events.

Telecommunication companies Bouygues and Free confirmed the impact on their services. French media reports indicated that lines operated by SFR were also affected. The parent company of Free stated that its teams are mobilized to restore services.

National investigations are underway regarding the vandalism of trains last week, which disrupted travel for about one million passengers in France as well as for people in London and other neighboring countries. Train services had largely resumed by Monday.

French media reported that an extremist left-wing activist was arrested at a railway facility on Sunday in the Seine-Maritime region of western France. However, the Paris public prosecutor's office stated that this is unrelated to what occurred on Friday and that no one has been arrested so far in the national investigation into the arson attacks.
