One-third of these individuals are users, while many other people using the food bank are working.

Richard Matarin, the research director at Food Banks Canada, said: "Working individuals may not be able to keep up with rising living costs because their purchasing power for this income is diminishing significantly."

He describes the demand for the food bank as "unprecedented," in a community suffering from rising grocery and housing prices, affecting almost every Canadian.

The report calls for a grocery and essentials tax credit, updating artificial intelligence, and ensuring that all federal benefits are indexed to inflation.

He stated: “What British Columbia is seeing is what we are seeing similarly across the country.”

He explained that "he does not believe anyone can predict this rapid increase in such a short time."

The increasing demand is felt daily at the food bank in Greater Vancouver.

Six years ago, the organization had 6,500 clients, but today it has 15,000 registered individuals, according to David Long, CEO of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

The numbers are staggering, and we are witnessing a huge increase in the demand for the amount of food we provide."

He says that their clients range from young families to fixed-income seniors who cannot keep up with inflation, including retired teachers and nurses.
