Typhoon Nanmadol: Landslides and floods hit Japan

Rescue workers in Japan warn of landslides and floods after one of the biggest storms in recent decades hit the country.

Typhoon Nanmadol has killed at least four people and injured about 100 others after reaching land on the southern island of Kyushu on Sunday morning.

By Tuesday, 140,000 homes were without electricity.

The storm has now been downgraded to a tropical storm, after moving across most of the country and heading to the sea.

Japan's public broadcaster (NHK) reported the death of a man when floods submerged his car and another death after being buried in a landslide. Two other people were found "without vital signs," a term often used to indicate death before being certified by a coroner. At least 114 people were injured, 14 of them seriously.

The super typhoon brought winds reaching 234 km/h (145 mph), causing destruction of homes, disruption of transport and businesses. It is equivalent to a category four or five hurricane.

The capital Tokyo witnessed heavy rain, and the Tozai subway line was suspended due to flooding. High-speed train and ferry services and hundreds of flights were canceled; stores and businesses were closed. Local video footage showed torn roofs, buildings, and billboards knocked down.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida postponed a visit to New York, where he was scheduled to deliver a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, until Tuesday to monitor the storm's impact.

Scientists expected an active hurricane season this year, influenced by a natural phenomenon known as La Niña.

Warmer sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean region due to climate change may also affect the frequency and intensity of hurricanes. Edited by: Yusra Bamtarf
