The successful Netflix series "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story" has sparked renewed interest in the notorious serial killer just in time for the Halloween season, but a spokesperson for eBay told CNN that Jeffrey Dahmer costumes are banned on the platform and removed under the "Violence and Hate Policy," especially since it is based on a true story. The policy states that "listings that promote or glorify violence or acts of violence, or even those associated with individuals known for committing acts of violence, are not allowed," and the spokesperson added that the ban on Dahmer costumes was not a new or recent decision. Similarly, the series sparked heated controversy due to its portrayal of the serial killer, with some critics, like Sarah Stewart writing for CNN, suggesting that despite its focus on Dahmer's victims, some victims' families said they were not consulted before the show was filmed. But the series, starring Evan Peters, was very popular; it garnered over 196 million hours viewed in the first week after its release. As for the true story behind the film, American killer Jeffrey Dahmer murdered and dismembered seventeen men and boys, mostly Black, in Wisconsin between 1978 and 1991. He was sentenced to life in prison in 1992, where he was beaten to death by a fellow inmate in 1994. As of Saturday afternoon, searching for "Jeffrey Dahmer costume" on eBay still shows some listings, such as clear glasses similar to those worn by Dahmer and the real-life Peters playing Dahmer in the "Monster" film. Additionally, it seems other online retailers like Etsy are selling sets of blonde wigs, clear glasses, and orange suits under the name Jeffrey Dahmer costumes.
