The Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged today, Sunday, the authorities of the Canadian province of Ontario to conduct a swift investigation into the circumstances of the death of one of its nationals by gunfire from Canadian police officers in an incident that occurred a week ago.
The Tunisian was killed last Sunday in the city of Oakville by seven shots from a Canadian police officer’s gun.
The two police officers are under investigation. Meanwhile, no information has been provided by the authorities regarding the circumstances of the incident.
A local news site in Tunisia mentioned that the Canadian police intervened by opening fire after receiving a report of a fight between the Tunisian victim and the owner of the house he was renting.
The Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "Preliminary unconfirmed information indicates that the deceased was not in a position of danger that would warrant being shot seven times by two police officers."
In a statement, it called on "the authorities of the Ontario province and the police of the mentioned city to quickly ascertain all the circumstances of the (incident), reveal all related facts, and hold administrative and criminal responsibilities swiftly and without delay."
