The Arab Republic of Egypt hosted today, March 21, 2024, in Cairo, a meeting of the Arab Hexagon at the ministerial level for Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Palestine.
The developments of the Palestinian issue and the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip were addressed, as well as efforts to achieve a complete ceasefire, increase the access of aid, implement Security Council Resolution No. 2720, and emphasize the rejection of any attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause or displace the Palestinian people outside their land, as well as any military operation in the Palestinian city of Rafah. The necessity of implementing the two-state solution was also affirmed, starting with Palestine obtaining full membership in the United Nations and recognition by countries that have not yet recognized the State of Palestine. The Palestinian side emphasized the need to work towards ending the Israeli occupation and establishing the independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. The attendees also warned of the serious and increasing regional repercussions of the expansion of the conflict in the region, which threatens the stability and safety of the region and the world.
In this context, the Arab ministers briefed the US Secretary of State on their vision regarding dealing with the current situation and the necessity of a ceasefire in Gaza, then moving to a new phase of tangible measures aimed at a political settlement through the implementation of the two-state solution according to international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. It was agreed at the end of the meeting to hold an urgent experts meeting from the participating countries in the coming days to determine tangible and coordinated priority steps to address the humanitarian crisis.
The attendees welcomed President Mahmoud Abbas's decision to appoint Prime Minister Dr. Mohammed Mustafa, emphasizing the importance of assuming his duties within a framework of transparency and enforcement of the rule of law in the West Bank and Gaza, carrying out necessary reforms, implementing relief programs, reconstruction, and revitalizing the Palestinian economy. The Palestinian side emphasized the necessity of exerting international and Arab efforts for the full withdrawal of the Israeli occupation forces from the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian side thanked all countries that provided humanitarian aid to assist our people in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing the importance of continuing UNRWA's indispensable humanitarian role.
The meeting was attended by the Foreign Ministers of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the State of Qatar, the Minister of State for International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, and the US Secretary of State. Palestine was represented by the Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Hussein Al-Sheikh, with membership of the Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the State of Palestine, Majdi Khaldi, and the Ambassador of Palestine in Cairo, Diab Al-Louh.
