Toronto Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie said that her city is on the right path to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
A report issued by the City of Toronto also stated that greenhouse gas emissions in Canada's largest city have so far decreased by 43% from their 1990 levels.
The report was estimated to be presented to the municipality's Environment and Infrastructure Committee next week.
“Significant and rapid action is necessary at the community level to achieve future goals, including reducing (greenhouse gas emissions) by 65% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2040,” the report added.
Emissions related to municipal activities represent only 5% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in Toronto.
The municipality said it is doing its part to reduce carbon emissions through several measures, including installing electric vehicle charging points. There are now more than 100 charging points in municipal parking lots.
The number of municipal charging points is expected to rise to 650 by the end of 2024, counting points in parking lots and those available on the sides of roads.
Meanwhile, Diane Sachs, a member of the Toronto City Council and former Environment Commissioner in the Ontario government, urges the provincial government led by Doug Ford to make more efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
