A police officer off duty was shot in the leg last Saturday night after recognizing a suspect wanted under a Canada-wide warrant for attempted murder.

This suspect now faces an additional charge of attempted murder, along with several weapon charges.

Toronto police said the off-duty officer was in the Bathurst and King Street area shortly after 11:30 PM last Saturday when he spotted the wanted man and called for on-duty officers to respond.

The police added that officers arrived and the suspect – wanted in connection with a shooting incident on December 3, 2022, on Church Street and Front Street East – fled on foot.

The police continued: "During this time, the suspect shot the off-duty officer in the leg."

The suspect, who was 28 years old at the time of the incident that led to the Canada-wide warrant, was apprehended, and a firearm was seized.

The Toronto Police Association stated that the off-duty officer is 30 years old and has six years of experience. They say he was treated and has been released from the hospital.

The police union wrote in a post on the social media platform X: "Despite this incident, our member is in good spirits and on the road to recovery, and we are grateful that he will be okay, and we are proud of his efforts."
