When it comes to fashion, street style has just as much appeal. This year, Time Out - the media brand that publishes local guides for some of the most interesting cities in the world, released its second annual tour of the coolest streets in the world.
James Manning, travel section editor at Time Out, said in a statement: "In most parts of the world, life as it was before the pandemic has returned with a bang, with people enthusiastically making plans and going out in their own cities."
This year’s list includes 33 streets, three more than the inaugural tour in 2021, and also features many new cities, including Taipei, Mumbai, Athens, and Accra.
The number one spot on this year’s list goes to Wellington Street, in the Verdun neighborhood of Montreal, where Laura Osborne, editor of Time Out Canada, says the street has “amazing cocktail bars, great places for brunch, some of the best sandwiches in the city, and even an urban sandy beach.”
While the United States did not take first place, America can be reassured that it has the most streets on the list with Calle Ocho in Miami, McDougal Street in New York City, and Wentworth in Chicago. Mexico’s representative on the list is Avenida Amsterdam in the trendy Condesa neighborhood of Mexico City.
As for Asia and the Pacific, five of the top 10 streets are in this region. Melbourne, Australia, topped the 2021 list with Smith Street but dropped to second place this year as Gertrude Street in the city took the top spot. Eliza Campbell from Time Out Australia described it as “beautiful, modest, and free from nightlife.” Tai Ping Shan ranks seventh, a neighborhood within a neighborhood on Hong Kong’s main island.
As for Europe, Time Out, which is headquartered in London, stayed quite close to home for some of its picks this year, choosing the coolest streets of the British capital in 2022 — Deptford High Street, a mix of street stalls, markets, shops, pubs, and more, which Chris Woyle, Time Out editor, says is not only the coolest street in London but “the most vibrant.” Further north, Great Western Road in Glasgow is the highest entry in the UK, ranked third, and the Danish city of Copenhagen ranks fifth. Other European streets added to Time Out’s 2022 list include Kolokotroni in Athens, Calle Echegaray in Madrid, and Capel Street in Dublin.
